J-Standard Soldering Process

This is a comprehensive, hands-on solder training program based on J-STD-001. The program describes materials, methods and verification criteria for producing high quality soldered interconnections. The standard emphasizes process control and sets industry consensus requirements for a broad range of electronic products. The operator proficiency program consists of five modules detailed below. Candidates must successfully complete module one and then can take any other module/modules consistent with their job requirements. All written exam grades for Modules completed will be averaged together. The minimum score for successful completion is 70%. The minimum score for each lab session is also 70%. Upon successful completion of the course students will receive an IPC J-STD-001 Certified IPC Specialist certification good for two years.

 

 

CSE- Certified Standards Expert

J-Standard Soldering Process

The Certified Standards Expert (CSE) is a subject matter professional with a high level of knowledge and understanding of a specific IPC standard or group of standards. The role of the Certified Standards Expert may vary by organization, but the CSE will be able to: 

  • Act as a subject matter expert for their organization, answering standard related questions, providing support to various levels of the organization, and, interpreting the standard for their organization.
  • Judge organizational conflicts in opinion of a viewed condition.
  • Act as the intermediary between the organization and IPC staff and/or industry experts on standards questions.
  • Update the organization on the latest standards and best practices from industry.
  • Provide feedback to standards committees on updates to the process for inclusion in the standards.
  • Interface with designers and process engineers to develop assembly processes.
  • The Certified Standards Expert (CSE) program is divided into two levels:
    • Certified Standards Expert (CSE)
    • Senior Standards Expert (SCSE)

 

What does the CSE certify?

  • The CSE program confirms that an individual has demonstrated the level of knowledge and understanding required to act as a subject matter expert for a specific IPC standard including:
    • IPC-A-610
    • J-STD-001
    • IPC/WHMA-A-620
    • IPC-A-600
    • IPC-6012
    • IPC-7711/IPC-7721
  • The IPC Certified Standards Expert (CSE) possesses the ability to:
    • Navigate the IPC standard quickly and efficiently
    • Identify relevant sections of the standard to address specific questions 
    • Act as a subject matter expert on all matters related to the standard
    • Apply the standard to specific company needs

 

How does this certification differ from the IPC Certified IPC Trainer (CIT)?

  • The CIT program is designed for classroom instructors. It confirms that an individual has the technical and pedagogical knowledge and skills required to train individuals in the IPC Certified IPC Specialist (CIS) program.
  • A CIT must host at least one IPC course per calendar year.
  • A Certified Standards Expert (CSE) is not required to train.

 

Who can provide the IPC CSE training program?

  • The IPC CSE training program must be conducted by an MIT that is, at the time of the training, certified as a Master IPC trainer in the specific standard being taught.

 

Who can offer the IPC Certified Standards Experts (CSE) certification 

  • Only IPC Training Centers may offer training and testing for the IPC Certified Standards Experts (CSE) certification.

J Standard Soldering Process

 

This is a comprehensive, hands-on solder training program based on J-STD-001. The program describes materials, methods and verification criteria for producing high quality soldered interconnections. The standard emphasizes process control and sets industry consensus requirements for a broad range of electronic products. The CIT level certification is an engineering level course designed to allow the successful candidate to certify individuals in their company to the J-STD CIS level or to simply be a higher level certification. Candidates for this course should have a broad range of experience in the electronics industry and some skills in interconnecting both PTH and SMT components and some background in technical training.

 

  • Instructional skills and the roles and responsibilities of Certified IPC Trainers.
  • General requirements, such as safety, tools and electrostatic discharge (ESD).
  • Wire and terminal assembly requirements, demonstrations and laboratory.
  • Through hole technology requirements, demonstrations and laboratory.
  • Surface mount technology requirements, demonstrations and laboratory.
  • General soldered connection acceptance requirements. Now including lead-free!
  • Machine and reflow soldering process requirements.
  • Test methods and related standards.
  • Using statistical process control methodology

Who should become an IPC J-STD-001 Certified IPC Trainer?

Assembly process engineers, quality assurance supervisors, training managers and others responsible for the quality and reliability of soldered electronic assemblies are excellent candidates for the program. Any company that uses J-STD-001 or is considering its adoption can use the program to address the training requirement identified in the standard. While there are no formal entrance requirements, Certified IPC Trainer candidates must have excellent hand soldering skills and ideally in training as well.

 

 

Modules

 

Module 1

General Requirements

This module is an introduction and overview to the entire contents of J-STD-001 Rev G and is a prerequisite to any of the following four technical specific modules. Module 1 consists of lecture, review, and an open and closed book written exam. 

 

Module 2

Wires and Terminals

This module provides requirements for wire and terminal applications consisting of lecture, review, and instructor demonstrations. The students will prepare and solder wires to turret, bifurcated, J-hook, pierced, and cup terminals. Students must demonstrate proficiency in preparing and soldering wires to the above terminal types and pass the open book exam.

 

Module 3

Pin-Through-Hole Technology

This module provides requirements for though-hole technology consisting of lecture, review, and instructor demonstrations. Students must prepare and solder through hole components to a printed circuit board. Components include a variety of axial and radial leaded devices. Students must also remove components from a PCB in a non-destructive manner. Students must demonstrate proficiency in the above and also pass the end open book exam.

 

Module 4

Surface Mount Technology (SMT)

This module provides requirements for surface mount technology consisting of lecture, review, and instructor demonstrations. Components types include 1206 through 0402 chips, SOIC’s, PLCC’s, SOT’s, QFP’s, TSOP’s, etc. The students must demonstrate proficiency in various types of installations (convective and conductive) and removals and pass an open book examination. 

 

Module 5

Inspection Methodology

This module provides requirements for inspection methodology and a basic introduction to process control issues. Through lecture and actual inspections of a sample PCB the student will demonstrate their proficiency in identifying acceptable and defective conditions according to the Standard. An open book examination is also required.
