Overview

The industry standard for acceptable soldered electrical and electronic assemblies.

Learning objectives

Apply J-STD-001 requirements for reliable soldered connections
Hand-solder and evaluate through-hole and surface-mount terminations
Interpret material, process, and workmanship requirements by class
Identify acceptable versus defective solder joints and conditions
Apply wire, terminal, and component termination requirements
Follow ESD, cleanliness, and rework requirements
Prepare for the J-STD-001 certification exam (includes a hands-on assessment)

Prerequisites

J-STD-001 includes a hands-on soldering assessment alongside the written exam.

Ability to read and understand technical documents in English
Visual acuity to distinguish fine detail and color (corrective lenses or magnification permitted)
Basic soldering and electronics-assembly familiarity
Manual dexterity for bench soldering tasks

Full certification includes the standard/textbook, workmanship kits, and exam. Recertification is exam-only (no textbook/kits), Tue–Thu.

CIS: Operators & technicians — working proficiency in the standard.
CSE: Lead techs / referees — deep knowledge, not training others.
CIT: Certified to train others to the CIS level.
Recertification (Challenge test): Renew a current certification by exam only, scheduled midweek.
