Learning objectives
- Apply J-STD-001 requirements for reliable soldered connections
- Hand-solder and evaluate through-hole and surface-mount terminations
- Interpret material, process, and workmanship requirements by class
- Identify acceptable versus defective solder joints and conditions
- Apply wire, terminal, and component termination requirements
- Follow ESD, cleanliness, and rework requirements
- Prepare for the J-STD-001 certification exam (includes a hands-on assessment)
Prerequisites
J-STD-001 includes a hands-on soldering assessment alongside the written exam.
- Ability to read and understand technical documents in English
- Visual acuity to distinguish fine detail and color (corrective lenses or magnification permitted)
- Basic soldering and electronics-assembly familiarity
- Manual dexterity for bench soldering tasks
